A 16-page printed comic and interview detailing the life of Alan Emtage, inventor of the Internet search engine.
Soul Searching is based on the life of Alan Emtage, the inventor of the internet search engine.
In 1983, Alan Emtage left Barbados to study computer science at McGill University in Montreal. It was here, in 1989, while working as a systems administrator, that he created Archie, the world's first Internet search engine.
Alan went on to become a founding member of the Internet Engineering Task Force, where he chaired the working group that defined the standard for the Uniform Resource Locator (URL).
The words in this comic were crafted by Jim Boulton, based on an interview with Alan Emtage that took place on the 28th of November 2017 at Publicis London, in front of a live audience.
Jim is the author of '100 Ideas That Changed the Web' and the curator of 64 Bits, an exhibition of web 1.0 websites that has toured globally, attracting the support of the British Library, the Library of Congress, CERN, and Google.
The illustrations are by Philip Smiley. Philip was born in Hawaii, raised in rural Virginia, and studied fine art in New York. He has lived in London most of his adult life but currently resides in Amsterdam. Philip has produced illustrations and artworks for clients including Dazed and Confused, Comme Des Garcons, Burberry, and Stella McCartney.
